Wait, Are We Still Working on 5G?
Yes, 5G rollout is still ongoing in many areas. But the telecommunications industry does not wait. While consumers and businesses are still getting comfortable with 5G, engineers, standards bodies, and technology companies around the world are already deep in the design and early testing phases of 6G.
Major players including Ericsson, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu, and NEC have already signed formal agreements and begun 6G trials. The 3GPP, the organization that defines mobile network standards globally, formally entered the 6G standardization phase in early 2026.
What 6G Will Actually Deliver
The numbers attached to 6G are almost hard to believe. In peak theoretical conditions, 6G networks could reach data speeds of 1 terabit per second, roughly 50 times faster than 5G’s theoretical peak. More practically, real-world 6G deployments are expected to deliver around 100 gigabits per second with latency under 100 microseconds.
To put that in context: downloading an entire 4K movie would take less than a second.
But speed is not the most interesting part. 6G is being designed from the ground up with AI-native architecture. The network itself will use machine learning to manage traffic, optimize connections, and adapt to demand in real time. Edge computing will become the default, not the exception, with processing happening at the point of data generation rather than in distant data centers.
6G also introduces Integrated Sensing and Communication, meaning the network itself will be able to sense the physical environment, location with centimeter precision, movement, proximity, and even object detection, as a standard capability.
Commercial Launch Timeline
Initial commercial 6G deployments are projected to begin around 2030. But the decisions being made right now about network architecture, spectrum allocation, and device standards will shape how businesses engage with connectivity for the next decade.
